The incredible and majestic manta rays

Who are these manta rays, amazing creatures?

Manta rays are among the largest fish in the world. Living in tropical and subtropical waters, they can weigh up to 1.5 tons and measure between 3 and 6 meters. Although they may seem impressive and intimidating, they do not have teeth and feed only on small underwater creatures. They grow slowly, live for a long time and reproduce very slowly, so they are very vulnerable.

The intelligence of manta rays

Manta rays have many qualities: they are particularly known for their incredible intelligence. Indeed, researchers discovered that their brain was very powerful. The weight of their brain is rather similar to a mammal’s one than to a fish brain. Thanks to a study carried out a few years ago, we also know that Manta rays are able to recognize themselves and their reflection in the mirror, which is not the case of any other fish, therefore they  have exceptional cognitives abilities.

An amazing encounter.

During a trip to the island of the gods, do not miss the encounter with the majestic Manta ray. Sociable and curious, they are really easy to approach. It is very common that they spontaneously swim closeby the divers, trying to play with them.  Many fish are, indeed, very curious such as sharks, but the curiosity of a Manta ray goes further. It will hear and recognize the sound of bubbles under water, the Manta being very curious will then get closer and will take her time and then seek interaction with humans. A real connection will then be created. A face-to-face meeting with a Manta Ray is an amazing and unique experience.

It is possible to admire Manta rays in some sites of the world, but there will most probably be on the site of Manta Point in Nusa Penida, not far from the island of Bali. They are also easy to find in cleaning stations because they love the company of small fish that help them clean themselves.

The ocean is full of wonders to discover…
