If there is one thing that you do not want to miss when visiting Bali, it is the Manta rays. These giant creatures that normally measure between 3 and 6 meters can reach up to 8 meters in some regions of the world and weigh up to 2 tons. They are a distant cousin of sharks and other rays. These majestic creatures are remarkable and so impressive and intimidating.
If they are called “sea devils”, it is not to describe their character but rather because of their two horn-like outgrowths around the mouth which serve to scratch the ground to look to eat. They are perhaps the largest rays on the planet, but they are considered harmless. Unlike other rays, they have no venom on their spines at the base of their tail and are therefore safe for interaction with humans. When someone wants to observe these giant creatures, they have to go to the “station of cleaning”. It is a safe place to meet the Manta and feel that time stops for a moment.
They can be observed only in a few sites in the world and you will have a good chance of crossing them at Manta Point in Nusa Penida. In 2011, their status became vulnerable. Despite the protection of the law they remain hunted in many countries such as Borneo, the Philippines, Papua, Indonesia and other countries where rays live.
Do not hesitate anymore: come and meet these majestic giants on the island of the Gods!
