Nyepi Laut.. Day of the silent ocean

Every year on the fourth full moon of the Balinese calendar Nyepi Laut is celebrated on the islands of Nusa Penida, Nusa Lembongan and Nusa Ceningan. This year it will take place on September 25th.

Nyepi Laut stands for the day of the silent ocean in which the population of al three islands will honor Dewa Baruna, ruler of the sea. The ritual of this day is meditation and quiet contemplation of the waters surrounding and sustaining the islands.

Therefore, on Nyepi Laut all activities on and in the sea around the islands will be ceased. No boats will depart from or arrive on the islands, no swimming or beach walks are allowed and the is no ability to dive or snorkel. Contrary to Nyepi in Bali, where streets are shut down and there is a complete silence, on the main land of the Nusa’s there are many celebrations and ceremonies that can be attended.

Out of respect for cultures and traditions, on September 25th, our company will not send out any boats in the direction of these islands. Luckily Bali has many others beautiful dive sites to offer.
