We only see beautiful white sandy beaches, crystal blue waters and magnificent marine life. However, our oceans are not as clean as some might look. In fact they are contaminated with an endless amount of debris.
For that reason, Project Aware has been brought into life, a global movement for ocean protection powered by a community of adventurers. In 2011 a special program, called Dive Against Debris, has been set up that empowers divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the types, quantities and locations of materials collected. Since the launch, more than 50,000 divers have participates in Dive Against Debris in 114 countries around the world, reporting over 1 million pieces of trash. As the only underwater debris data collection program of its kind, Dive Against Debris both improves the health of ocean ecosystems through localized volunteer efforts and provides valuable information about underwater debris to help inform policy change.
This year Aware Week is taking place from 15th-23rd September. It’s a week to focus on ocean pollution, creating awareness and taking positive actions to help our environment.
It’s our goal to encourage and empower more divers to look after the ocean and therefore, Atlantis Dune team will come together on September 15th, which also happens to be World Cleanup Day, to collect debris from the ocean in the Sanur area.
