What it is a Pinisi Vessel?
Literally, the word phinisi refers to a type of rigging (the configuration of masts, sails and ropes). Indonesia’s wooden Phinisi boats were used to carry exotic spices and textiles through the ancient spice trading route. Boat builders in Sulawesi would take years to handcraft the vessels on the beach with an intensive and detailed process. In December 2017, UNESCO recognised South Sulawesi’s hand-crafted sailing vessel as an ‘Intangible Cultural Heritage’ and their unique legacy lives on today in our beloved Dune Aurora for cruising, diving and recreation.
